Women in Islamic headscarfs at the Olympic Games (Back book cover)

This struggle began at the start of the 1990s.

Three women of different backgrounds and having traveled different roads begin a new adventure that leads them to an involvement with the Olympic world. Their aim: to refer to the terms of the Olympic Charter itself to obtain the exclusion from the Games of countries praticing sexual segregation against women, following the example applied to South Africa for its apartheid.

A year earlier, in Teheran, the highest authorities of the Islamic Republic had decided to defy the world through sports by propagating the idea of «the hidjab and «modesty» for the free women of the world.

Clearly these two visions of women’s (and thereby societal) rights, could but end in confrontation. One, founded on the universal principles, the other on the submission of women’s rights to religious and traditional dictates.

This book, written in a lively and humourous style, traces the history of a struggle that stretches over two decades and resembles that of David against Goliath. It includes such different people as Commander Massoud, Juan Antonio Samarach or Jacques Rogge, as well as historical pioneers of the Olympic Movement, such as the Baron Coubertin and his sworn enemy, the Frenchwoman Alice Milliat… But this time, it is not David who will win.
